COVID-19 Benefits Update

The following information has been provided to us by the employer.

Extended Health Care – normal coverage will be provided for any instance of coronavirus/COVID-19.

The deadline for submitting claims for expenses incurred in 2019 has been extended to April 30, 2020.

Out of Country Coverage (OOC) – Coronavirus/COVID-19 will be treated as any other medical emergency with the following administrative exceptions for claims incurred on or after February 1, 2020:

  1. Plan members travelling outside of Canada who are placed under quarantine by a medical doctor or public health official are considered eligible under our OOC and Emergency travel assistance benefit from the start of the quarantine period.
The medical orders requirement is waived for this illness only, if the plan member is travelling in an area identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a high risk for Coronavirus.
  2. For plan members travelling in an area identified by WHO as high risk who are not permitted to return home to Canada because public health officials have placed the area in quarantine due to Coronavirus, the medical orders requirement is waived for this illness only.

In either situation, Sun Life will cover expenses for accommodations, meals, and replacement of a lost return ticket back to their home province caused by the delay, subject to any limitations in the contract. (NEW Sun Life will not apply these exceptions for travelers leaving Canada on or after March 19, 2020.)

Sun Life has a dedicated COVID-19 Response webpage and dedicated page for plan members.
