Teaching Assignments in Spring and Summer Terms are voluntary not mandatory

Faculty are reminded about the following provisions of article 11.2.2 (a) with respect to teaching assignments in the Spring and Summer Terms:

“No employee shall be required to teach Spring and Summer Session. Teaching these classes is rewarded with extra compensation in accordance with Article 18, unless the employee and the employee’s Department Head or Dean, in accordance with the procedures specified in article 11.1, mutually agree to reduce the employee’s teaching load at other times during the year on a pro rata basis in lieu of extra compensation.”

This means that teaching cannot be assigned in these terms without the faculty member’s consent. A consenting faculty member is to be paid an overload stipend unless the faculty member’s teaching load at other times during the year is reduced.
