December 31 Spending Credit and Allocation Deadline Approaches for Flexible Spending Plan

A reminder to all faculty:

December 31 is the deadline for spending at least some of your Health and/or Wellness spending accounts under the Flexible Spending Plan. Amounts allocated are permitted only one two-year rollover and funds left unspent after the two-year period are returned to the Employer.

Now is the time to check the credit amount allocations and their expiry dates to ensure you are maximizing the benefits provided by each spending account through this Plan. In PAWS, click on the Employee link, then on My Employment, then on Flexible Spending Program. Or, in My Sun Life (www.sunlife.ca), click on My Health and Wellbeing. The amount remaining in the accounts are specified.

If you purchased eye glasses or had prescription medicine costs or paramedical services costs that exceeded the regular Health Plan benefit reimbursement amounts, you may make a claim for reimbursement through your Health Spending Account. Faculty may claim eligible health spending costs for dependents as well as their own personal costs.  

Just some of the eligible expenses payable through the Personal (Wellness) Spending Account are fitness class registrations, court fees, green fees, personal trainer fees,  child care, elder-care and fitness equipment purchases (for expenses of the faculty member only). A more extensive list of eligible expenses is available on the HR website. 

THE DEADLINE FOR ALLOCATION OF 2015 FLEXIBLE SPENDING CREDITS IS DECEMBER 31, 2014.

December 31 is also the deadline to allocate the $500.00 in your flexible spending program to either your Health Spending Account or your Personal Spending Account. After this date all allocations are irrevocable for the period January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2015. If you make no allocation by December 31, the amount will be allocated as designated in the previous year. 

THE DEADLINE FOR THE SUBMISSION OF ELIGIBLE 2014 EXPENSE CLAIMS IS MARCH 31, 2015.

Claims for reimbursement from any of the benefit plans must be submitted to Sun Life within 90 days of the end of the plan year (December 31 for all plans).
