Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day (IWD). For more than a century IWD has been observed around the world to raise awareness of issues affecting women. It is a global day to recognize and celebrate advancements while reminding us of the need for continued vigilance and action.
The UN, noting “from challenge comes change,” has declared, Choose to Challenge as the theme for IWD 2021 and is calling on people everywhere to help create an inclusive world by seeking out and celebrating women’s achievements. “A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day.”
Canada’s theme is Feminist Recovery and recognizes that, while COVID-19 is affecting us all, it is disproportionately affecting marginalized and vulnerable Canadians with women being the most deeply impacted by layoffs, lack of childcare, increased unpaid work and domestic violence. Join in taking a pledge to advance gender equality and support an inclusive recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Use #FeministRecovery on social media accounts. “An inclusive recovery offers the opportunity to advance gender equality and provide economic and social stability for all Canadians.”
