After members of Unifor Local 594 voted 97% in favour of strike action against the Co-op Refinery Complex (CRC) last December, the CRC locked out the workers. Unifor contacted labour organizations, including USFA and the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (of which USFA is an affiliate), asking them to participate in a national boycott of co-ops that are part of the Federated Co-operatives network in solidarity with the union.
According to its Boycott Policy, the SFL consulted affiliates who might be affected by such a boycott. The SFL does not support a boycott at this time because it will negatively impact other affiliates. Some organizations have not fully recovered from last fall’s strike against the Co-op. The SFL is leaving the decision to individual member organizations to take a position on a boycott. USFA is not taking a position on a boycott, but is advising you of the situation, which continues, and asks you to stay informed about the lockout.
